The Public Point of View - |
Andropause Since the discovery of the male climacteric, the experts have been discussing its correct nomenclature: andropause, climacteric virile, or hormone decline are only a few of the possible terms. The term andropause is derived from the Greek words "andro" (man) and "pausis" (end) and is an analogy to the term created by French scientists in 1874 "menopause" ("menses" are periods). In the meantime the term andropause has become a handy catchword, even though with the male climacteric there is no end to procreative ability - only a continual decline in hormone levels. It is scientifically undisputed that people are living longer. Education of the public regarding a healthier way of life, scientific discoveries and medical achievements have contributed to this. However new questions will arise. How can quality of life in old age be improved? How can old age be made active and fulfilling? Questions which also for men in advanced years are gaining in significance.
